KOTA SAMARAHAN: Fishermen landing their catches at the Tanjong Bako Fishing Jetty, which is undergoing construction near here, will receive a special incentive from the Malaysian Fisheries Development Board (LKIM).

The board’s chairman Datuk Seri Dr Irmohizam Ibrahim said fishermen for the C2 Zone, which is more than 30 nautical miles from the coast, would be paid 20 sen for one kilogramme of fish landed at the jetty.

Fishermen for areas below Zone C, he said, would receive 10 sen for every kilogramme of catches landed at the jetty.

He said the incentive was to encourage fishermen to benefit from the jetty, which was one of the largest fishing port in Malaysia and Southeast Asia.

“Such special incentive is to encourage the fishermen, hence further optimising the use of this port.

“The jetty is also capable of storing stocks of fresh frozen fish, turning the facility into a source and stockpile for protein consumption nationwide,” he said after conducting a visit to the jetty, near here, recently.

The construction of the jetty costs RM247.8 million.

The facility, he said, would be operated by the Sarawak Fishermen Association and supervised by LKIM.

“We will hold talks to make sure this port is not a ‘white elephant’ project.

“We also want to turn this facility into a special landmark
for Sarawak and fishermen in
the state to further improve
the fishery industry in the region,” he said.

To accommodate the fishing community, he said an ice factory would be built next to the facility.
